About us

Townsville Aboriginal and Islander Health Service (TAIHS) provides a range of medical and clinical services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Townsville and the surrounding region. Our health services are provided by a dedicated team of Doctors, Indigenous Health Professionals, Nurses, Visiting Specialists and Allied Health Professionals.

TAIHS health, wellbeing and community services seek to improve health and social outcomes for community through; strategic partnerships, advocacy for needs, promotion of awareness and education in improved health and social practices, promotion of knowledge and understanding of underlying issues and unique needs and development of the evidence base.

About the position

  • Undertake psychosocial assessments with a range of patient groups to determine patient needs
  • Deliver evidence-based social work interventions in response to identified issues including information and referral, advocacy, facilitating meetings with family, community resources and health professionals and brief counselling
  • Respond with advanced clinical judgement to sensitive issues such as Elder Abuse and welfare concerns, Domestic and Family Violence, self-harm and suicidal ideation, and Child Protection 
  • Assist with patients care, including a focus on chronic health, ageing and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health
  • Support GP Clinic staff with elements of care plans, mental health care plans and other relevant assessments as required
  • Maintain a commitment to upholding AASW (2020, 2023) Social Work Code of Ethics and Practice Standards at all times
  • Participate in data collection to evaluate social work in GP settings
  • Follow all clinic protocols and policies to ensure a safe workplace environment
  • Take an active role in maintaining relationships with other health professionals and educating them about the role and function of social workers in the health setting
  • Provide In-Services and/or Information to GP staff on social work-related areas and activities
  • Maintain up to date patient notes and uphold patient confidentiality in line with social work professional standards and clinic protocols.

To be suitable for this position, your qualifications, experience & licenses for the role will consist of:

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor of Social Work 
  • Membership of AASW
  • Social work experience in a medical or allied health setting
  • Awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, history and the issues affecting the lives of TAIHS client group - Cultural Competence 
  • Experience with My Aged Care and/or NDIS

Desirable

  • Experience providing supervision to social work students on placement
  • Mental Health Social Work Accreditation

Required Licenses and Checks

  • Ability to pass a National Police Check – no Serious/Criminal/Court Record 
  • Current Blue Card (working with children and young people) (or AHPRA registration if required)
  • Current C Class Drivers Licence (Qld) 
  • COVID-19 Vaccination: It is a condition of employment for this role to be, and remain, vaccinated against COVID-19
  • Evidence of vaccinations and immunisations as per GP clinic requirements
