TAIHS Specialist Homelessness Service Youth Shelter
TAIHS accepts referrals from the community organisations in addition to government agencies and self- referrals.
TAIHS Youth Shelter also accepts placements for young people involved in the Department of Child Communities, Child Safety and Disability services (DCCSDS) under the Child Protection Act 1999 only:
- Where it is determined by the DCCSDS to be in the best interests of the young person.
- On an emergency basis until; a more suitable placement can be arranged.
- Where there are appropriate case work supports in place.
The Specialist Homelessness is staffed twenty –four hours per day, Monday –Friday. The centre is staffed during hours with a Program Manager, Senior Youth Workers who with a combination of day and evening shifts and Youth Workers in the evening including sleepover and week ends. Clients have access to the shelter all week end and public holidays.
Week end group recreation activities are planned with residents and the shelter is not accessible while residents and Youth Workers are out but telephone contact can be made via the main shelter phone number which is diverted to a mobile phone.
The shelter operated 365 days of the year. Any necessary closure due to natural disaster will be in accordance with the Natural Disaster Plan.
