Catchment Area

TAIHS Family Support Services (FSS) covers all communities located within the Townsville, Palm Island, Hinchinbrook, Charters Towers, Flinders, Burdekin, Whitsunday, Mackay and Isaac Local Government Areas.  These areas include Townsville, Palm Island, Ingham, Charters Towers, Hughenden, Ayr, Giru, Brandon, Home Hill, Bowen, Collinsville, Proserpine, Sarina, Cleremont, Moranbah, Dysart.


TAIHS Family Support Services (FSS) provides in-home support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families with children at risk of entering the child protection system or where possible, give the best chance of exiting the system with enhanced skills and parenting ability. Family Support Workers assist families to:

  • Where required, enhance the attachment between children and their parents or caregivers;
  • Build on the strengths within the family and their support networks;
  • Help families to reduce safety concerns;
  • Prevent or reduce the contact between families and the child protection system,
  • Assist in the reunification of children with their families;
  • Provide direct support within the family and the local community;
  • Provide culturally appropriate, relevant, responsive and competent service delivery to help families meet their needs.


The program is staffed by a Program Manager, Senior Practitioner, Senior Administration Officer, Family Support Officer and nine Family Support Workers.  Three of the Family Support Workers are located in Townsville.  The Family Support Services also works in partnership with Girudala Community Cooperative Society Ltd. to deliver the FSS program in the Bowen area.
